true treasures are not pompous

Oftentimes, we seek ephemeral stuff that can satisfy our endless discontentment. We look for things that glitter [literally and metaphorically], flashy stuff. Have we forgotten that not everything that shines is gold?

Former president Cory Aquino is a simple person. Her constant prayers for the Filipino people help us pull through amid the continuous crash in our economic status. When I read her biography, I am so amazed when I learned that she did not even reside at the MalacaƱang palace while she was a president. She even respected the red lights and did not use a noisy siren in her vehicle. Jiggy Cruz, the son of Ballsy Aquino - Cruz, remembered the times when he was younger. He did not even know that his grandma was the president of the Philippines until someone asked him "How does it feel to be the grandson of the president of the Philippines?"Just imagine her contrast to those government officials who were so proud as to proclaim that they hold a government position, no matter how low it is.

I know that a lot were expecting way too much of her when she became a president. But then, we must be thankful that a person like her, who is not interested with politics and power, assumed the office of presidency so that the Filipinos can be strong enough to pick up the remnants of a horrid dictatorial past. She fought for democracy, for the Filipino people, not with guns and military tanks, but her deep faith to God and her genuine kindness that can never be feigned. No one can do better than she did. No one! You can never find another person who can hold a government position without having any vested interest. She was always concerned with the Filipino people until the very last breath of her life. She continuously prayed for all of us, she prayed for our democracy.

I can go on and on about how wonderful Tita Cory is. The number of people who attended the transfer of her remains from La Salle Greenhills gym to Manila Cathedral and her interment is the testimony of the tremendous love and gratitude for her.

Mabuhay ka, Tita Cory. You are always here in our hearts. Your body may be dead but your spirit lives forever. Let us not waste her efforts to protect our democracy. Let us prove that "The Filipino people is worth dying for".

Mahal ka namin, Madam Cory! Isa kang tunay na kayamanan ng masang Pinoy at isang napakahalagang regalo mula sa Diyos. Salamat, salamat!
